Fundraising 101

Raising money can be a daunting prospect but if you follow the steps below it can be not only successful but fun!

Step 1: Set Up Your Fundraising Page

  • Every rappeller gets their own dedicated page on ECAN.org that will provide them with tools to manage donations, track progress, and more. You can get access to all of that when you sign up to rappel on ECAN.org.

Step 2: Pick a Hero

  • Every rappeller is going to be doing the event in honor of someone affected by Esophageal Cancer – a survivor, someone going through it now, or someone who was lost to the disease. These are our Heroes; the people who will help us raise awareness about EC. If you have someone you want to do the rappel for, that’s great! If you don’t, we’ll partner you with a Hero.

Step 3: Tell us Your Story

  • We’ll also have a dedicated rappeller page on the StoriesToSaveLives.org website that will include a photo, the story about why you are participating, your Hero, and links to your fundraising page.

Step 4: Set a Fundraising Goal

  • $1,500 is the minimum but don’t stop there! Get to higher levels and you could qualify for perks like a helmet-mounted camera or VIP treatment. Plus, our top fundraisers will win some amazing prizes including a Viking River Cruise for 2 to Europe!

Step 5: Spread the Word

  • Start telling your friends, family, and coworkers about the event and encourage them to help you reach your fundraising goal. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are a great way to generate excitement but you can also send emails, write personal letters, or make phone calls.

Step 6: Don’t Forget About Company Matches

  • Check with your company to see if they will match your donations and be sure to ask your donors if their companies offer that perk. It’s a great way to maximize your fundraising power.

Step 7: Monitor Your Progress

  • Check your fundraising page every day and keep an eye on how far you are getting. Set benchmarks for yourself along the way so you can know if you need to do more to reach your goal.

Step 8: Remind People

  • Everyone gets busy and they might not be able to make a donation the first time you ask. People often need to be reminded before they will sign up and they will appreciate a gentle nudge from you along the way!

Step 9: Consider Your Own Fundraiser

  • Think of a fun way to get people to contribute to your fundraising goals, whether it’s a party, a picnic, a car wash, or any other event that will get people excited.

Step 10: Have Fun!

  • Fundraising can be a lot of work but it can also be a great way to connect with people who want to make a difference. Enjoy it!
